Refreshing or Revolting: 2015 BMW M4

By |   |
Photos of the 2015 BMW M4 are out, and the coupe is everything we expected it to be. Based on the recently launched BMW 4 Series, the 2015 M4 is sporting all the necessary tweaks to accommodate its high-performance hardware, including a 425-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. It also appears that the gold paint job, which first appeared on the concept version earlier this year and walks a fine line between garish and unique, will be part of the production model’s color palette when it goes on sale next summer. That should give you folks plenty of time to decide if the 2015 BMW M4 is refreshing or revolting compared to the outgoing BMW M3 coupe.

There’s a lot going on up front where the bulbous hood hints at the twin-turbo beast hidden beneath. The aggressive lower bumper serves multiple purposes, feeding the engine as much cool air as possible, while optimizing the coupe’s aerodynamics. From the side, the M4’s bloated fenders are hard to miss, as are the massive rims and the golden brake calipers that come with the optional carbon ceramic brake system. Look closely at the side-view mirror’s upper edge and you’ll notice a C-shaped hook that not only looks cool, but likely helps with aerodynamics. And if you couldn’t tell the hood has a power dome from the front view, then it’s definitely noticeable from the side. Up top you’ll find the composite roof that provides contrast to the rest of the car, while also helping lower the M4’s curb weight. Out back, the rear bumper is just as intricate as the front, and we’re hoping those quad exhaust tips will emit some sweet noises. The trunk, which is also constructed from composite material, features a subtle integrated spoiler to provide downforce.

Inside, the only features that will matter most to some drivers are the clutch pedal and gear shift knob for the manual transmission. Otherwise, the M4’s cabin showcases the requisite M touches, including a sporty three-spoke steering wheel, bolstered front seats, and the signature red and blue contrast stitching. Current press photos reveal carbon fiber trim pieces (likely an option) and seats with unique perforation patterns. Last week we featured the 2015 Ford Mustang, and the responses were mixed. User The NABG said, “I didn't expect to like the 2015, but I'm completely and pleasantly surprised. I think it's a great evolutionary design for Mustang. It's modern, but retains Mustang DNA through and through. More than anything, I think it looks sophisticated.” KMPrenger, however, feels “like the car is still a bit underwhelming and lost some of its soul.”

When the Mustang first took a run at the M3 I thought oh wow two of my favorite cars going at it but I was rooting for the home team of course but to see how far the Mustang has came along it made me proud to be able to say that it held its own and more the 2011 Mustang prove that Ford is ready for the prime time. Though I will have mixed feelings. I will still be rooting for the home team I'm just glad to see the Mustang is improving more and more

Big time Mustang fan

I can't fathom why BMW is pushing such a revolting (perfect word) color palette with such an amazing vehicle.  The 4-Series already has beautiful options far more desirable than the "Jaundiced Gold", "Vulgar Orange", and my personal disfavorite, "Smurf Blue"  being foisted on the Ms.  No idea what these guys are thinking but I hope they expand the available colors to something more appropriate for a distinguished vehicle as this.

I don't like the halo headlights, it looks weird to me.  Looks similar to the last 3 series coupe, not a bad design though.

I think the styling of this vehicle is decidedly more muscular then that of the E92 coupe, and represents a solid move forward for BMW's M division. Can't wait to see what they do for the M5 and M6

I wasn't sure if I liked the look of this car or not (they usually cars look better in person.)  I'm definitely no fan of BMW design (post banlge!) and I don't like the color either and those odd spoilers on the front also make me wonder if that's a good thing, but then I took another look at the new Mustang GT and realized the BMW really doesn't look that good - Ford did an amazing job with their new Pony and I wonder if the GT will kick this car in the rear.

Refreshing design; power: revolting; and given today's competition, it should have at least 450 hp. I guess the aftermarket will take care of that..

Oh, boy.

Please do enlighten us why this car should have at least 450hp?? What's significant about that number??

The taillights and headlights look kind of weird, but overall it's a fairly boring design. I think it looks a little better than the last generation though.

Styling:  refreshing

Name:  revolting - is it that hard to keep a legendary name?

Boss 302 will eat this one. There should be a comparison between this and the 2015 mustang gt.

Will "eat" it in what sense? 0-60, lap time, handling or quarter mile? The M4 is high on the list IMO for next year's Best Driver's Car.

How right you are.

I definately beg to differ - how so? One cost 20k more and that's about it.

I have a hunch the GT will out perform the M4.  And then there's the ATS V....  can't wait.

the sedan is much better looking, imo.  i wouldn't say refreshing, but definitely not revolting.

The 3 Series is usually the best looking car they have.  It is BMW's bread and butter and they don't screw around with it too much .. even in the Chris Bangle days.  I like the outgoing interior a little better, but it doesn't matter.  This is one fine looking car, especially the coupe (4 series).  The gold color however should be reserved for Uber Egos of this world.

Too bad BMW allowed the M3 and M4 to be infected with those horrible " exposed grille side/Dame Edna spear headlights "......both have to go.

How about "meh". That's a bad color tho.

LOVE the front, will reserve judgement till i see it in the flesh.

At first glance, the M4 is refreshing on the three sides of the car where BMW implemented some tasteful muscular styling without resorting to Bangle's gaudy slashes.  But the front air intakes are pretty ugly, the chrome trim on the grille is gaudy, and the headlights seem to be oversized fashion statements rather than light, aerodynamic, functional units.  Minimalist, tasteful styling always ages better.

VERY refreshing is the effort BMW put into weight reduction.  The M4 is claimed to be 180 pounds lighter than the old M3 Coupe at 3,300 pounds.  Finally a step in the right direction!

Weirdly refreshing. I just want to know the function of those lips on front bumper.

I want to see them test this thing against the new Mustang GT!

The E92 M3 was one of the best looking BMW's ever in my opinion.  It is a classy and understated design that has stood the test of time, like the other E92 3series.  This M4 looks too boy racer for me, its edgy and trying to grab attention, not understated or elegant at all.  It looks kind of like the offspring of the previous M3 and the Mercedes CLA.  The gold color is ugly to me, it will be interesting to see other colors and see if the edginess persists.  I do think it will look better than audis, which are dated and plain, but like the F30 3 series I suspect this one wont age well.  Sometimes the hasty evolution of style runs past a sweet spot.  Porsche seems to understand this better than BMW.  Oh yeah, forget about the sweet exhaust sounds, the I6 is a great engine but without a stereo to provide the sound, it wont sound anything like that incredible V8...
