Porsche Provides 3D Printer Blueprints for Scale Model Cayman

By |   |
If you’ve been nice enough to receive a 3D printer from Santa this year, then Porsche has the perfect way to test out your new toy. Available on Porsche’s website are the virtual blueprints to print out your very one 3D model of the mid-engined Cayman.

Porsche recently announced the news on its Facebook page and accompanied the post with a short time-lapse video of a 3D printer creating a Cayman model. 3D printing has been making headlines in recent years, so if you’re unfamiliar with the process then this video serves as a perfect primer. The Cayman model should take anywhere between a few hours to a few days to complete, depending on how fast your 3D printer can squeeze out those thin layers of plastic. That said, this plasticized Cayman won’t have rolling tires or a detailed interior like a traditional model. The necessary Standard Tessellation Language (.STL) file is available for download on Porsche’s website. Porsche is encouraging folks to “create, print, and colorize your personal Cayman” and post a picture of it on the automaker’s official Facebook page (with the hashtag #3DCayman). In its unfinished state, the plastic model looks like a severed finger on wheels, so adding color is key.

For now, the Cayman is the only Porsche available for 3D printing, but the automaker could easily release the blueprints to other models if there's enough demand. Source: Porsche

I don't understand the allure of 3D printing....seems like a primitive children's pretend-toy version of a Star Trek transporter.
