2014 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Edition 30 Celebrates Sedan's 30th Birthday

By |   |
It's been 30 years since the Volkswagen Jetta GLI was introduced to the world, and to celebrate the car's birthday, the German automaker has announced the sporty Jetta variant will only be sold as the Edition 30 special model starting early next year.

The Edition 30 differentiates itself from the current 2014 GLI with specially designed 18-inch alloy wheels, red trim on the front grille and inside the bi-xenon headlights (navigation-equipped Edition 30s only), a spoiler on the trunklid, and Edition 30 badges. Red accents are also featured inside the cabin with two-tone upholstery and contrast stitching on the steering wheel, shifter, brake lever, armrests, and floormats. Only four exterior paint colors will be offered on the Edition 30: Deep Metallic Black, Pure White, Tornado Red, and Reflex Silver Metallic. Standard equipment includes fog lights, LED taillights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, touchscreen audio system, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Edition 30 with navigation further adds hands-free keyless entry, push-button start, rearview camera, LED daytime running lights, and adaptive bi-xenon headlights. No changes have been made underneath the hood, which means the Edition 30 will be powered by the regular GLI's 210-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that can be matched to a six-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission. It also gets the usual sport suspension, bigger wheels and tires, upgraded brakes, and aggressive styling.

Volkswagen describes the GLI that debuted 30 years ago as Jetta sheetmetal wrapped around GTI running gear, which means it was motivated by a 90-hp 1.8-liter engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The GLI stood apart from the Jetta with body side moldings, three extra gauges in the center console, and sport seats. Certain styling elements on the Edition 30 are a throwback to the first GLI, including the rear spoiler and distinctive interior. Expect the Edition 30 to start appearing in showrooms early next year, when pricing information should also be revealed. Source: Volkswagen
