2014 Infiniti Q50 Earns Five-Star NHTSA Rating

By |   |
The 2014 Infiniti Q50 may not have hit the high mark with us, but it did with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which just announced that the sedan and its hybrid counterpart have earned an overall five-star safety rating.
More on Motortrend.com:
Aside from the five-star overall NHTSA safety rating, the new Q50 got five stars in the rollover and side crash tests, and four stars in the frontal crash test. The Q50 comes standard with a host of airbags to keep occupants safe, while offering new safety technologies including predictive forward collision warning, land departure warning, lane departure prevention, and direct adaptive steering. Although last year's model (G sedan) didn't receive an overall NHTSA rating, it did score five stars in the rollover test. For comparison, the 2014 BMW 3 Series, 2014 Lexus IS, and Cadillac ATS have also earned an overall five-star safety rating in NHTSA tests.
As for ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Q50 earned a basic rating in the front crash prevention tests. Front crash prevention systems are rated by the IIHS as superior (highest rating), advanced, or basic (lowest rating) depending on features and effectiveness. Front crash prevention systems that meet National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) performance criteria earn a basic rating. The Q50 has yet to undergo other IIHS tests to find out whether it qualifies as an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus.

"Although last year's model (G sedan)"...get it straight Motortrend, the G37 and the Q50 are 2 completely different vehicles released by Infiniti. The Q50 is brand new in 2014, and a COMPLETELY different car.  It is lighter, more agile, 2 inches longer, has a larger and more luxurious interior - the G37 is somewhat of a muscle car in comparison and has been around for a long time. Hard to take Motortrend seriously when you can't even get that basic information straight. In the future the G sedan will become the Q40, as everything with Infiniti is now going to be either a Q (sedans, smaller unibodies) and QX (Suv's, crossovers - e"x"tra space).

The drive by wire is already having  failures . That makes this car not safe at any speed candidate.

With drive-by-wire steering, you're gonna need the added safety.

The only thing I don't like about the Q' is the interior styling, which I think is dated compared to the ATS and S4.

While I wouldn't trade my G37S coupe in on this family car, I do like its styling better and I'm getting to the age where a somewhat smoother ride might be nice.  The coupe has a definite sporty ride but is very agile due somewhat to its 4 wheel steering.  At least they kept the 3.7 in the Q50 rather than sticking in the old 3.5 they use in the JX and Pathfinder, though the 3.5 does pretty well in those probably due to the CVT.

If you can afford anything else or like paying more than go for it. The Q50 has grown on me. It is still the best in its class. Stop hating and go forward.

Yes.  Though the reviews say it's not quite as good as the G series, which I have, I like the new style much better.  They reduced the classiness inside a bit (like scrapping the signature clock), it still has the 3.7 engine and it supposedly rides smoother than the sporty ride G.  For people who aren't familiar with the G, they'll be quite happy with it.

The Q50 is a big disappointment, they went backwards in terms of styling and driving dynamics.  The G37 is a much better car.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I absolutely love my Q50, it offers all the performance of the G37, however in a much more refined package. The suspension has also been improved over the G, as it taut and still soaks up bumps. If one does not like Drive-By-Wire or DAS, they can opt more a non-S Q50 with the excellent hydraulic steering system. It is one of the most technologically-advanced vehicles in the segment. Fact is, every vehicle has its faults, especially those new to the market. One who says its a step backwards clearly has never given it a long, hard look.

@carenthusiast13 It does not offer all the performance of the G37S.  The steering, even in non Steer-by-wire form, is not as feelsome or accurate as the G37.  And the handling is dumbed down too.  I put 50k miles on my G37S sedan before selling it.  After driving multiple versions of the Q50, I simply could not stomach the chassis changes.  Like the new interior though, still out on the exterior.  Moved onto a Cadillac CTS-V instead.

@carenthusiast13    I have given the Q50 a long hard look, and it is definitely a step backwards. The G37 is a much better car in every way.  The performance of the G37 has true feeling and accurate handling.  That is very superior to the Q50 which has lifeless steering, or basically no feeling when it comes to driving.  The Q50 is no longer a sports car.

So I agree that the Q50 is a disappointment. Even the styling is worse than the G37.  It's not bad, but I'm going to stick to my G.

@Judah Richardson @jasonphone    I don't like the new grille of the Q50, it has a more simple design and looks more boring compared to the G37.  The worst part is that the back of the Q50 looks exactly like the crappy Hyundai Sonata.

Congratulations to Infiniti.  Lately the automobile press having trying very hard to discredit Infiniti new Q50.  The because the new "stir by wire" technology is a first but it irony it is not from the German big three Audi, BMW, or Mercedes.  Lets face it Infiniti is here to stay they know what they are you doing.  The Q50 out sold the IS in November sales.  Q50 is still a better car.  The new technology is to make us safe on the road.  Thank you Infiniti.

Don't worry, MT is the same magazine that gets wood driving a VW Passat that has an interior equal to a Sonic rental car and styling only the Sand Man would love (Zzzzz). I like the styling direction of the new Infiniti models.
